What Is Spikeball? A Beginner’s Guide

If you’ve seen people in the park diving, laughing, and bouncing a ball off a circular net, you’ve probably already spotted Spikeball in action. Fast-paced, portable, and incredibly fun, Spikeball is one of the fastest-growing sports in North America—and it’s easy to see why.

Whether you're completely new or just curious, here’s everything you need to know to get started.

What Is Spikeball?

Spikeball (also known as roundnet) is a 2-on-2 sport played with a small, round net placed at ankle level. Think of it as a mix of volleyball and four square, but with way more action and movement.

Teams take turns serving and spiking the ball off the net, trying to make it bounce in a way the opposing team can’t return—rallies are fast, dynamic, and can happen in all directions.

How It Works – The Basics

  • Players: 4 total, 2 per team
  • Objective: Hit the ball off the net in a way the opposing team can’t return it
  • Touches: Each team gets up to 3 touches (like volleyball) to return the ball
  • No sides: Once the ball is served, players can move anywhere around the net

Why People Love It

  • Quick to learn, hard to master
  • Portable – Play it anywhere: beach, backyard, gym, park
  • Social and competitive – Great for casual games or full-on tournaments
  • Cardio-packed – Short bursts of movement and constant rallies make it a great workout

Where Did Spikeball Come From?

Originally invented in the late 1980s, Spikeball exploded in popularity after a 2008 relaunch and a high-profile pitch on Shark Tank. It has since grown into a global sport with professional tournaments, national leagues, and a thriving grassroots community.
