In our last article, we introduced the volleyball court, basic rules, and scoring. Today, let's dive into player positions and their roles—so you'll be ready to jump into a game!

Player Positions & Rotation

Each team has 6 players on the court, rotating clockwise each time they win a point on the opponent's serve.

  • Setter – The playmaker who sets up the attacker for the spike.
  • Outside Hitter (Left Side) – Usually the team’s strongest attacker.
  • Opposite Hitter (Right Side) – Blocks the opponent’s outside hitter and attacks from the right.
  • Middle Blocker – Focuses on quick attacks and blocking in the center.
  • Libero – A back-row specialist who wears a different jersey and can’t attack or serve (in most leagues).
  • Defensive Specialist – Similar to the libero but can serve and has more flexibility.

Common Violations

  • Net Touch – Touching the net during play.
  • Double Hit – One player hits the ball twice in a row.
  • Four Hits – Team uses more than 3 touches.
  • Back Row Attack – A back row player jumps in front of the 3-meter line to spike.
  • Foot Fault – Stepping on or over the service line when serving.
